Dehcho First Nations
Mike Low is the current Aboriginal Aquatic Resource and Oceans Management (AAROM) Program Coordinator for the Dehcho First Nations. He has a background in Environmental management with education from the University of Alberta, Royal Roads University, and the Northern Alberta Institute of technology. In the past, he worked with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans through the Hay River Metis Government Council and he has a background in fisheries management.
The guiding principle of the Dehcho AAROM program is to manage aquatic resources in the area using local Dene people and having them on the land. Dehcho AAROM is involved in all nine Dehcho communities, with the core initiative being the Guardian program which is also part of the Dehcho Guardian program; there are two Guardians hired and trained in each community who monitor the fisheries in the traditional territories. These guardians monitor water quality, recreational fishing, subsistence fishing and are involved in research.
