Sharon Peter

Ma-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation

Sharon is a member of the Crow Clan. She was taught by her grandparents and her mother the importance of the land, culture, and lifestyle of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun. Her grandparents continued to live off the land right until they passed on and shared knowledge with whoever showed interest. They were some of the elders that guided the land claims process for Na-Cho Nyak Dun, and their main purpose in doing this was for future generations to be able to live off the land as they and their ancestors had done. Sharon continues to pass this knowledge onto her four children and eight grandchildren as much as possible.

Sharon has a Bachelors of Education Degree from Yukon College. Shortly after completing her degree, she became involved with Na-Cho Nyak Dun government. She has served as a Deputy Chief, Councillor, Implementation Manager, and Economic Development Manager while working for her government. She has served on many boards and committees to ensure that Na-Cho Nyak Dun values are included in decision-making. She served on the Traditional Knowledge and Strengthening Partnerships Committee (TKSPC) of the Mackenzie River Basin Board from 2016 to 2018.

“Our people have a great connection with the land and all of its resources. Respect and our cultural ties with the land needs to be maintained. This is what makes us First Nation.”
